Gilbert Cooper, 98, of Owensboro, passed away of natural causes on July 31, 2017 at Owensboro Center. He was born December 9, 1918 in Lewisport, KY to the late William Samuel and Saby Saunders Cooper. Gilbert is a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England during the war. He worked for more than 35 years at Glenmore Distillery. After retirement, he went on to be the Captain of the Executive Queen based in Owensboro. Gilbert enjoyed boating, citizens band radio, playing pool and collecting coins. He was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church, a past deacon at Central Presbyterian Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He also is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ora Lee Greathouse Cooper. Surviving are his children, Jerald G. Cooper of Germantown, TN, Frances L Cooper Rives of Kirksey, KY and Samuel L. Cooper of Lakeland, TN; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be noon Friday at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory burial to follow in Lewisport Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10:00 am Friday at the funeral home.   1. Hi Grandad. It’s Jenny Lee. I miss your practical jokes, and your blue eyed grin. Daddy, Sam, has his own pool table now and I still play the piano. Hug Grandmom for me and tell Grandaddy hi, and I hope you are also with all our passed pets as well. The military is not easy. I’m the first female our family to do it so it’s really hard sometimes. I wish you and granddaddy were here to help me navigate these Waters. I talked to Uncle Gerald and Daddy a lot about it, but sometimes I still wish you guys were here. I have nothing but fond memories of you all. I love and miss you all. May you all rest in peace.
