Thelma Layman, 82, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center. She was born November 26, 1930, in Daviess County, to the late Edward and Ida Green Speed. She was a former employee of Sorgho Elementary School and was a member of Garden Green Baptist Church. Mrs. Layman enjoyed U.K. Basketball, bingo, walking and spending time with her grandchildren. She especially had a great love for her Lord. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Layman (1997) and sister, Berthol Parks. She is survived by her children, Mike Layman, Joe Layman, Steve Layman, Judy (Jimmie) Thompson, Kay (Jerry Royse) Layman and Brenda Layman all of Owensboro; eight grandchildren, Keith Jones, Rick (Jill) Jones, Jason (Jamie) Dill, Justin Whitmer, Bradley Bellew, Crystal Stevens, Amy Whitmer, and Shaylei Bellew; three step-grandchildren, Jeff Thompson, Scott Thompson, and Tracy Leeper; seven great-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille (Don) Carlson of Aurora, Illinois; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Precious. The family extends a special thanks to Hillcrest Healthcare Center Nursing Staff on Units two and three. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home with Tim Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301 or to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter, Kaden Tower, 6100 Dutchman’s Lane, STE 401, Louisville, KY 40205-3284.
